Any one have a serger with a free arm? How important is that? I would think trying to do a cover stitch or even overlock on a cuff or sleeve would be difficult without it?

It is a nice feature, and perhaps when I've become more skilled with my serger I'll actually use it. Right now the only time I pull of the free arm is to disengage the knife.

MlSews, and you have what brand and model serger? I'm trying to find out which ones have the free arm.

My old singer serger had a free arm, and I would love to have one again, but truthfully, my bernina's don't have one and I didn't even think of it untill you brought it up. I make hundreds of skating dresses with tiny little openings for legs, sleeves, etc. and do just fine without it. Not a big enough issue to have me change my serger...I just love it!

Bernina 1100DA - I have two that run every day!

I believe the newer bernina's have a free arm.

One of my sergers does have a free arm and it is so handy for sewing baby items. This is a very basic model because it seems that some of the newer top of the line sergers that have a free arm, the arm is a bit too large. Sizes of the free arms on sergers do vary.
My coverlock serger does not have a free arm and it is also much more heavy duty for larger projects like heavy throws etc.
I prefer having both types of sergers for their different types of knife systems which also helps for different types of projects.

Hi-I have the Viking 936 serger which has a free arm. The free arm was one of the reasons I bought the 936 and I use the free arm a lot.

thanks for all the helpful info! There are so many brands and models, it's hard sometimes to keep up. But with all this input I can narrow down the features.

I use my cover lock without the free arm for most of what I do but I really use my other serger with the freearm for all of my sewing for the grand kids and making dolls and doll clothes.
