I am new to the site and just wanted to say thank you for a great place :D I also have a ?, I am concidering getting the Brother SE-270D Sewing and Embroidery Machine. I have a Brother XL 2010 now and never had any trouble with it but it is about 12 years old. I saw the SE-270D in Wal-mart and it looked kind of simple to use as also having the ability to embroider. (which will be new for me...lol) Can any one tell me if it is easy to embroid with and if it is a good machine. The more the machine can do on it's own the better as I am slowly going blind due to RP  . I have twin grand babies ( boy and girl)and a 7 month old new grandson and would like to do come quilts and such for them while I still can. Thank you for any help anyone can give me on this post.

Bump !!!!

I know a few people on the Forum have the 270D machine so I'm going to bump your post.

I started with a Brother 180D and loved it so much I can't sell it. I also like my Janome 300e but it is an embroidery only machine.

Hi, I have a brother sewing machine that I have sewed with for years. I just recently (last week) purchased the brother 270D as I am very new to the world of embroidery. Wanted to see if it was something I could do. I tried it last night and it was easy to learn. Sewing without feet is a drastic change but it was fun. I know people say "you get what you pay for" however, I feel my money was well spent. You can sew with it right out of the box provided you have embroidery thread and some stabilizer.
Now if I could figure out how to get designs from all the awesome sites I find out about on here I would really be having a blast. I'm glad I got mine and am really enjoying it.

I have had the Brother 270D for about 3 months and love it. It is very easy to use and I have learned a lot from this forum.

You need the PED-Basic box and card reader so you can get all those fun designs off the internet to your machine. It's kind of like a big memory card for your computer like the memory cards for digital cameras.

I bought this machine to replace my 25 year old Kenmore and feel it's really worth the money. I've been having a blast making all sorts for things for my 5 grandkids!

Thanks for all the info on the machine, is it true that it embroiders all by itself, I find that to be great news if it is true. not like the old hoop ones that you have to turn ? Also what is stableizer this is all new to me, thanks.

Hi
I just bought a Brother Se 270 D myself.I have not got it yet but I think it is coming with the mail today.
I live in Sweden and I bought the machine from USA.
I already have a Husqvarna Quilt Designer 2 but sometime I feel I need one more because I love to do Lace Bowls and I thought it could be great to have 2 machines that embroider on the same time.I also have a doughter that is 13 year and she love sewing with me.I hope the Brother will work well for both of us and good luck.
Hugs Petra

Hi Tiny Dove, 8)
Welcome aboard :!: Before you purchase, make sure that you get what you really need. I started my sewing experience on a Singer (sewing only). It dates back to the 80's. I put my sewing hobby on hold and when I returned back, I made lots of wonderful projects. When the computer fever was running on a high note, I also purchase a computer. There it was, when I found out that there were machines out there that did things and I had no knowledge of it. I started with my Brother 170 (Disney collection.) I wanted to get more out of something that had it's limits. I then purchased my Janome 9700. Now, this baby is my treasure. I try to take so much care of her, like if she was my own child. Inclusive, I took out my Serger which I had abandom and winded up, having to dismantle the machine, since it was JAM  from NON USE. Today, I will put it back together, after bathing it with one CAN OF OIL. My son saw all my manchines and asked: "Mom, how many machines you have?" I responded, only 5 and this includes a TINY SERGER, I purchased on a sale. 8) Men have Car Hobbies, us ladies have Machine Hobby. Let us know, what you wind up with and NOW LET'S SEE THOSE PROJECTS :!: :D
Until we meet again in some courner of this place....
Your new Friend,
Zena

Thank you so much for the info, I have an old Brother XL2010 model now that is in perfet working order, I have had it for almost 13 years now...use it for basic sewing...cloths,curtians, small kids quilts and such.
I am looking to try my hand at some embroidery now since I have grand kids. I am making them toddler bed sets for christmas and would like to do some embroidery on sheets and pillow cases and such...put thier name and things... my granddaughter set is Disney Princess and my grandson likes Disney cars. I figured with 3 grandkids under the age of 3 I should be doing alot of sewing from now on as long as my eyes hold out

Is it true that these machine basiclly embroider by themselves... I have never done any embroidery before, think the closet I ever got was counted cross stitch

Welcome to the forum. I have the Brother 270D and have been emb. for several months on it now. I also have a Brother CS 6000 for regular sewing and love both of them. I purchased both at Walmart and have had no trouble with either one of them. There is a learning curve with the 270D but once you've mastered the threading part it's a breeze. You will need peds basic to DL from the net. No you do not have to move the hoop or anything while it emb. All you do is the hooping and set up and then it does the design programmed. Mine is still amazing to me to just sit and watch it do its thing. . My DDK love having their names and designs put on things for them. Stablizers are the backing, stability for the design to hold to. Everyone is so helpful here and willing to help you with problems. Alot of us have the 270D. HTH and good luck in your new venture. Judy

TinyDove, Just for your information there are no Cars or Disney Princess designs built into the Brother Machines. There are other Mickey etc designs that are fun. You can buy design cards with the Disney designs you are looking for on them.

I've loved my machine and once you get the hooping done it's fun to sit and watch it embroider. It is quite amazing!

thank you for the info on that, I did see the other cards by Disney that can be used for the machine...they cost a pretty penny too  do fourm members trade disney designs and other typs of designs on the fourm site to DL into the Ped Basic, is that possible.

TinyDove, all the Disney designs are copy right protected so they are not shared here on this forum. Your best bet to get licensed, legal designs is to buy the Disney cards. You can only use the Disney designs on personal items, such as gifts for your grandkids, as it isn't legal to sell anything with Disney designs on them.

I hope that was clear as mud! I've used my Disney designs to make each of my grandchildren pillow cases. They were my first embroidery tests. The kids loved them, but I would never put the Disney designs on something I was going to try to sell.

Aside from stabilizer you will also need embroidery thread so don't be surprised if you spend nearly as much on your supplies as you did on your machine to get all the different colors of thread and stabilizers that you need. It can become quite addicting but it us fun!

Hello Tiny Dove.
I started out with a Brother 180D and loved it but it turned out to be too small. It only had a 4x4 hoop. Now I have a Brother Super Galaxy 3100D. The maximum size hoop is 260mmx160mm. That is much better.
But I am considering to buy a PR 600 with capring. But only when my machine dies.
I don't use my machine for sewing. I have a seperate sewingmachine.
This is much better in case one needs repairing or cleaning.
I know that my machine isn't for sale anymore but there are other options.

Good luck with your choice.

Saskia

Thank you all for the info, I will just be doing some embroiding for things I make for myself or the GK, I will not be doing it as a profit maker, just for fun, so I guess for me the 4x4 would be ok, the cost of the machine is a nice price and leaves me more $ for any Cards that Brother makes that I might like. Hoping the DH buys it for me this week...and I know he will...LOL I will be back with any ?s I might have, which I am sure I will have a ton  Thanks again for all the help and info

I agree that the 270-D is simple to use. I have had this machine for a little over a year now and I love it. It does the embroidering pratically by itself. All you have to do is touch a few button and change the thread. What I really have enjoyed about this machine (cant make comparisons with other machines tho, because I havent tried any) is that once you load the cassette with the thread, it will thread the needle for you. I love that. I mean who really enjoys threading needles???? LOL. I do wish however I could use a bigger hoop than the 4x4. Good luck to you and hope you enjoy whatever you decide on. Have fun.
